Well here ya go again and you thought you knew something Hawaiian and you didn’t. You thought as I, that the most scary, dangerous fierce animal in the Hawaiian sea (kai) is the shark (niuhi). No, you would be wrong, the scariest, most beach day ruining animal is a sea urchin (Wana) pronounced “vah-na”.
The long black spiny sea urchin, it lurks in the tide pools waiting patiently for a fresh set of feet to arrive so it can inject as many of its spiny needles between your toes and under your toe nails as possible, breaking off under the flesh impossible to remove……..yes you will scream and it will get worse and no the ER won’t take you cuz there isn’t anything they can do for you but tell you to go get a bottle of vinegar and a bucket to soak your foot in, some say Epson salt also works well, Benadryl, Advil for pain and swelling “Yes there will be pain” and beer or wine for your travel companions.
Forget the hike to volcano, snorkeling or zipping anything. You are couch or bed bound until flight time. You don’t wanna mess with the Wana, at all cost.
