Hawaiiphotoman has shot just shy of a million images of swim bike run and paddle on Maui, Molokai, Oahu and The Big Island. It all started around midnight on the coveted IronmanFinish line, Me, camera around my neck, a tool belt on my hips and a Bud lightin my hand. I was there with Rocky Campbell’s construction crew.
It’s the best party in town, this is where I met Karen Doane & Sharron Ackles of Ironman, Joe Ackles of Keauhou-Kona Triathlon, Jim Lovell (JTL Timing) of Kona Marathon, Gerry Rott of The Lavaman. All in one night, I was off and running. But where?
We built a team of six (808) photographers, which expanded when Birgit and Elvis dog joined us. We set up a mock finish tower in the driveway to train us, with Elvis and I (David) running thru, over and over, Birgit shouting “shoot shoot shoot!!” in her Austrian accent.
In the early days we ID each athlete by hand (not India), our living room would have 8 student computer operators working day and night. Moms dropped off in shifts. It was a sight to see, all those cords, cables, Bianelli’s pizza, Coke and kids. I am so proud of this wonderful work experience.
We only missed one athlete in 25 years, an elder woman pulling an oxygen tank crossing the Kona Marathon finish line during a late 35mm film change. Never happened again with digital.
Hoping all athletes a great weekend. We will miss you.
Mahalo Team Hawaiiphotoman for your loyal service.
Too too many to list.
Happy Hump Day!
