Madame Pele is putting on a show at Halema’uma’u crater. Her lava is bubbling at the crater and flowing down the pali (cliff) in her hidden tubes at 35 mph where she exits like an enormous Orange Kool Aid pitcher into the kai (ocean).
The 2,000-degree magma explodes into shapes and textures as it cools when hitting the water, bits fly 100 feet into the air raining strands of blown lava glass (Pele’s hair) and rocks onto the occupied cliffs.
She draws droves of photographers and iphoners to capture the moment after moment after moment as well as a few that come for the view. If you are willing to ride a bike and walk for a couple hours you too can be amazed beyond the printed word. HIGHLY RECOMMEND Kaimu Rentals – ask for Primo.
Is it scary? A bit, but you are in control, you don’t have to hang over the 100-foot cliff, plenty to see in the safe zone.
The last time I pedaled a bike I had a paper route so I thought the bike ride was the scariest.
Happy Hump Day
