20 years is a long time or blink of the eye.
That’s how long we at Hawaiiphotoman, a gang of working 808 (Hawaii) photographers have teamed up to capture 10s of thousands of moments in time. For this years Lavaman 9 shooters will assemble in different locations at the same time to fight the light, the weather, the traffic and the iphones, to grab just one shot of each athlete as they fly by. Each swimmer, biker and runner.
Five photographers are inside the ropes getting those nerves and hugs at the swim start. Three bike photographers are now on the hot highway, spread out so they can get each cyclist coming and going down the highway. It’s fast!
At the same time the finish line is being decorated with flowers, sponsors banners and flags are zip tied up in place to assure the best possible photo for the athlete. The run team is setting up out on the lava to get the ocean shot as they blow past. The finish line photographers have remote cameras and lights to control and with in 7 hours 1,700 athletes will finish.
17,000 images will be shot and uploaded up to the photo lab before most of the athletes have washed their socks.
